An Encounter With The Living God

This morning Andy Smith will be looking at Acts 4:32-5:11. Its a picture of the church at its best, and also at its worst. We will see that its also one of the most difficult passages in the whole book, as God acts quickly and decisively to punish sin in the community. It forces us to consider our own lives, and our own community, and realise that God’s holiness is a sober and serious reality. It is difficult but healthy to remember that our actions, thoughts, responses affect us spiritually and physically, but also the entire community as it pursues Jesus. Lets commit to praying together continually for the health and unity of the community here at BCV.

Legacy Thinking

Today we will be spending time in Acts 13:13-52 as part of our series on called On Mission: Living in God’s Empowering Presence. In this passage we see followers of Jesus trace through the story of God. As they do this, we get to see God’s hand at work through the centuries as He has loved and guided His people, culminating with the sending of His Son Jesus. As we read these verses together, I believe we are being invited to join in the story of God that the Apostles unpack in our passage, but also to consider the legacy that God has left in our own lives, and ask ourselves how we will steward the inheritance of grace, mercy and goodness that He has for us.

Beyond Legalism: Priorities and Values, Not Rules

Today we continue looking at Acts 15. Last week we watched the early church wrestle with the question over what it means to be part of the family of God. Is Jesus, and faith in Him enough, or do we need to have anything else? Do we need to take on anything else, or are we saved by faith, resting in the grace of God in Christ? The apostles decide that it is by faith alone that we are saved. But, they give new followers of Jesus some guidelines that highlight fidelity to God, and purity before Him. Instead of rules, they give values and priorities, that help a multicultural church stay faithful to God, and unified. The priorities that they highlight still impact us today, and invite us to consider how we might pursue holiness and fidelity to God and one another.
